I explore the complexities of landscape through digital photography, film, animation, print and audio. I’m interested in the places and spaces where the urban, suburban and industrial landscape intersects and interacts with the ‘natural’ landscape and with wildlife.
The history, theory and interpretation of still life painting in the Netherlands, Spain and France from the sixteenth century to the present day is my academic specialism, and I also write about contemporary art more widely.
I’m an experienced fine art lecturer, tutor and gallery/museum educator. I have taught a wide range of creative art skills, cultural theory, critical and contextual studies and history of art
The focus of my academic research interests and writing are still life painting, the concept of the ‘grotesque’, and notions of the ‘sacred’, particularly as defined by the French theorist Georges Bataille.
